How can we help?

The services we offer are designed to cater to all types of projects across Australia.

No two projects are ever alike. We have created design services to match the scale of your project, allowing you to keep things simple with a quick modification to an existing design from our catalogue, or deep dive into a bespoke joinery project from conception through to installation.

While we are a Sydney-based company, our furniture ships across Australia, creating accessible custom furniture to you no matter where you are. We have also added an IKEA Hack service for joinery projects outside of our serviceable area so that we can offer our materials and designs to interstate clients looking at built-in joinery.

Plywood is a distinct focus of many So Watt designs. We choose to work with this strong and modern material, offering numerous timber species and finishes to suit each project.

Why Plywood

Most joinery companies in Australia work solely with MDF or particleboard, which are easy and cheap to work with, but not ideal in terms of tactile enjoyment, waste management or impact on worker health.

As of January 2023 we will only be offering Australian made plywood options acorss all our projects, as part of our commitment in Australian manufacturing. By introducing multiple timber species we hope to spread our purchasing across multiple timbermills for considered supply chains that have minimal impact.

We know plywood. We know which species and grades are right for each application, and how to cut and treat the panels to ensure they remain straight and true.

We believe in bringing healthy materials into a home and avoiding imitation options wherever possible.

FAQs

Q: Is plywood better than other joinery products, such as solid timber or particleboard?
Plywood is sustainable, flexible and durable. By contrast, solid timber can be much more expensive, while particleboard often uses compounds that are not great for your health or our planet. Plywood uses gentle compounds and beautiful timbers in a way that minimises waste, lowering its eco footprint substantially. Read Part I of our plywood series to learn more.

Q: What other materials do you work with?
We often find solid timber dowel to be a great pairing with plywood, and are looking at introducing other exciting sustainable materials such as post-consumer plastics in 2023. We also laminate our ply with brass, copper and laminate. We do not use MDF.

Q: What do you use to seal and finish your plywood furniture?
All our finishes are low VOC and are either water-based or a wax based finish, depending on the requirements for each specific project. Our finishes are applied by our finishing team who bring 25 years experience in professional furniture painting.

Q: What’s the difference between furniture and joinery?
Furniture is a loose item that can be physically picked up and moved around a space. Joinery is fixed cabinetry that becomes part of the building, such as kitchen cabinets, shelving and wardrobes.

Q: What’s the difference between customising and commissioning furniture?
Customising is when you make minor changes to one of our existing designs (already prototyped, tested and with all components accounted for). Commissioning is when you ask us to develop, design and build a new concept
